Laser Vision Correction – Traditional and Wavefront LASIK Surgery in San Diego

Imagine opening your eyes in the morning to a clear new day. This can be possible with LASIK. Coronado and greater San Diego LASIK surgery patients continue to discover the freedom that comes laser vision correction. Dr. Cook will personally evaluate you and answer any questions you may have about your procedure. During your initial free consultation, Dr. Cook will explain the options you have with regard to your eye care needs. Corneal maps and thickness measurements will be taken. If you are an appropriate candidate for LASIK, you will be told as much. If you are not a good candidate for LASIK surgery, alternative forms of treatment will be suggested. Contact us to schedule your free LASIK consultation.

LASIK is a surgical procedure and should not be undertaken lightly. If Dr. Cook is not comfortable with your understanding of the procedure or clinical condition, he will not perform the LASIK surgery. There are no high-pressure sales tactics. You are given the opportunity to come in, get all of your questions answered, and then, if you so desire, go home and think about your decision.

Once you decide to have LASIK, our experienced staff will ease you through the surgical process. Our surgical coordinator will provide you with a folder with all the information you will need including preoperative, postoperative, and surgery times. All of your postoperative medications will be provided to you at the time of surgery at no extra charge. During the procedure, there will always be a staff member by your side to comfort you. After your procedure, Dr. Cook will personally examine you and provide instructions on how to care for your eyes. We encourage postoperative visits, even if it is only for reassurance. One year of follow up care is included as part of your surgery.

With Dr. Cook, you get quality eye care from a doctor that is concerned about your overall eye needs. We strive to provide personal service and hope to be your eye care provider long after your LASIK procedure is successfully completed. Refractive Error

Do you suffer from nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), or astigmatism (uneven corneal curvature)? If so, then you have a refractive error. Refractive errors occur when the outer layer of your eye (its cornea) is shaped incorrectly. The improper shape of the cornea prevents the images your eye sees from focusing properly on the back of the eye (the retina). By reshaping your cornea so that the images focus directly on the retina, LASIK can correct your refractive error and improve your vision.

The Procedure

LASIK is usually performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. A light oral sedative is provided to relax you. The eyes are then numbed with anesthetic drops. A microkeratome, or the Intralase® laser is then used to cut a thin flap in the cornea. The flap is pulled back, and an excimer laser is then used to sculpt the corneal tissue, reshaping the eye for better vision. The flap is then laid back in place, where it acts as a natural bandage that requires no stitches. Most patients experience clearer vision by the day following surgery and are able to return to their normal activities soon after having LASIK. Our Coronado and East County medical staff members are ready to answer any questions you have regarding the recovery from LASIK.

Custom LASIK: Wavefront

Wavefront LASIK surgery uses mapping technology that allows us to customize the LASIK procedure to each patient's eye. During wavefront analysis, a neutral beam of light is passed through the eye to create a three-dimensional map, like a fingerprint, of the patient's unique visual aberrations. The map is then used during LASIK to modify the reshaping action of the laser. Custom LASIK with Wavefront can treat higher order visual aberrations, which are believed to be responsible for complications such as glare and halos. It can also produce extremely sharp, clear vision and give patients the strongest chance of achieving 20/20 vision or better. All-laser LASIK: Intralase®

Alvarado Eye Associates is proud to offer 'all-laser LASIK' with the Intralase® femtosecond laser. This FDA approved laser can replace the microkeratome used during the first stage of LASIK to cut the hinged flap in the cornea. Instead of a mechanically guided blade, a high precision laser is used to target the optimal depth and location needed to create the corneal flap. The Intralase® laser allows Dr. Cook to create the flap without inducing the higher eye pressure needed for the microkeratome and to achieve precise, predictable flap results.
