Glaucoma Surgery for Coronado and San Diego

Glaucoma is a degenerative eye disease that can lead to permanent vision loss and blindness. It affects almost three million Americans, half of whom do not know they have the condition. Preventative screening is critical in order to detect the disease in its early stages, while treatment can effectively manage the condition and prevent vision loss. Dr. Cook treats glaucoma patients in San Diego using a wide range of medical and surgical options and has had considerable success with Endoscopic CycloPhotocoagulation (ECP), a specialized laser eye surgery technique.

Dr. Cook works closely with his glaucoma patients to monitor and manage their conditions and would be happy to sit down with you and discuss your treatment options. If, together, you decide that surgery is the right option, our competent staff will guide you through every step of the process. They will help you arrange all necessary preliminary lab tests, as well as coordinate your treatment with your primary care physician. You will also receive a folder from our surgical coordinator containing all necessary forms, along with preoperative and postoperative instructions and surgery times.

Regardless of whether your treatment involves surgery or ongoing medical treatment, Dr. Cook will continue to closely monitor your eyes at regular intervals. His goal is to ensure you have healthy eyes and clear vision now and for years to come. If you have questions about glaucoma treatment or prevention, or would like to schedule a consultation, please contact us today for an appointment. Learn more about Glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma results from excessive pressure on or damage to the optic nerve at the back of the eye. Most commonly, this occurs when the fluid that circulates within the eye fails to drain normally, building up pressure in the eye. If not treated, this pressure can damage the many individual nerve fibers that make up the optic nerve and lead, in the initial stages, to blind spots or loss of peripheral vision. Often, the condition progresses so subtly that it is already well advanced before a person notices any vision problems. Regular eye exams with glaucoma screenings, particularly for high-risk individuals or those over 60, are critical as a first step in catching and effectively treating this disease. Glaucoma Treatment

Glaucoma can be managed with a variety of treatments, depending on the stage and form of the disease. Medication in the form of eye drops is frequently prescribed to lower intraocular pressure. Other treatment options include both laser eye surgery and conventional surgeries that aim to improve fluid drainage and decrease pressure in the eye. Surgery can be used to open a blocked drainage system, create a drainage valve, or create an opening to the sclera (white of the eye) to reduce fluid pressure. Please contact our offices if you are considering Glaucoma treatment through laser eye surgery. Our Coronado and East County medical staff are eager to answer any and all questions you may have.

Endoscopic CycloPhotocoagulation (ECP)

ECP, a new laser procedure that takes a novel approach to glaucoma treatment, has proven remarkably effective at stopping the progression of the disease. Instead of focusing on the eye's drainage system, ECP targets its fluid production capacity. The ciliary body is the circular gland beneath the iris responsible for creating fluid. During ECP, a laser is used to treat the ciliary body, thereby reducing the amount of fluid it makes and lowering pressure in the eye. ECP can be performed together with cataract surgery or on its own as an outpatient procedure. ECP effectively lowers intraocular eye pressure, both halting the progression of glaucoma and allowing many patients to reduce or eliminate their reliance on eye drops.
